GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR Laundromat's empty, must be my lucky day It's about time I said buh-bye to this crud Who is it, who's whispering in my head, the greedy voices keep singing, begging for more I just want to be satisfied, doing the bare minimum I want to grab that heart of yours with my bare hands Let's fill it up with "happy," until we rest in peace That glimpse of hell isn't so bad, scatter it with love I love you, please humiliate me. Rob me of my dignity and laugh my honey GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR I think my screw's coming loose GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR GRIND, FUTURE, A BEAUTIFUL STAR |
Overview
I just want to be satisfied, doing the bare minimum. " |
Kick Back was composed and recorded by Japanese artist Kenshi Yonezu, a renowned artist who has recorded for several anime openings before this. He was selected specifically for the anime, and was known to be a fan of the original manga. It is thought that the title "Kick Back" refers to the instance when a chainsaw jolts up towards the operator during the starting process, meant to reference the main character's self destructive behavior.
It is unknown how much influence Tatsuki Fujimoto had over the creation of the opening. The full song was released on Spotify a day after the anime premiere, on October 12 2022. As of 12/13/2022, the song holds 85,892,844 streams on Spotify. |

Written Analysis
This song ended up being by far the hardest to analyze due to the amount of key switches and modulations that occur in the song. The opening baseline riff has no chord structure, and the outro is simply a riff on a minor i chord until the end. Each section of the song seems to have a different key, as well as modulating within the actual section itself. There is also plentiful examples of hyper meter present in this opening, in both the pre-chorus and chorus. If you choose to count in cut time, the pre-chorus has 12 measures instead of 8, and the chorus goes from an 8 measure section to another 12 measure block to extend the phrase. This opening to me is the prime example of a modern programmatic opening sequence for an anime. The animation is very top notch, the music reflects modern trends and instrumentation, and yet it still remains within the overall form of the typical anime opening. It is extremely programmatic to the show and the vibe and is already a favorite amongst the community. Instrumentation includes electric guitars, bass, synthesizers, and drums. The vocals are also very gritty and almost violent, reflecting upon the show's nature. The hard rock influence is very clear in this opening and is a major part of its character. |
